you will want to adjust the BASE timing also.. get a timing light , disconnect the ESC timing wire and then set it to the sticker.. which is usually 0 degrees advance (I know this is not what you are used to for a gasser but the computer controls total timing.)


people often try and mess with the timing on these TBI engines by twisting the dizzy but then they just bounce off the Knock sensor and never truly run like they are supposed to..



id the engine is cammed then you may want to burn a chip with a little bit more aggressive timing in the mid range but stock, the ECM did a decent job..

I found a bunch of the old OBD-1 ALDL software I wrote years ago.. I almost had a TBI Bus but the seller was an asshat so I didnt get that one..

IIRC the chevy guys say they advance the timing like 7 degrees?

I definitely want to burn a chip for it. I want to eliminate the speed limiter, the egr, and I want to set it for a 180 thermostat.
Its not cammed, although a cam and heads would really make it nice!

it should be tagged for the base timing.. mine were always 0.. but the bigger trucks may have been different.. I think the tall decks were for sure..



I used to try and run em out a few degrees.. the software i wrote hada counter that showed the 'ticks' the Knock sensor racked up so Id run it where id get a few ticks when i first punched it.. as normal for all chevies.. but wouldnt tick up much when i was running it out... I know I still have the cables I made for that stuff around the house.. the software ran on windows 95.. lolol wrote it in like Visual Basic 4.0 or something ..

We've become Miata enthusiasts pretty quickly. What an awesome fun little car!
So far we've swapped the console for a dual cupholder later model and fitted earlier model sunvisors. They're bi-fold. Super cool.
Did an oil change and noticed the slightest of coolant leaks at the lower plastic tank seam so we're ordering a new all-aluminum tig welded high performance radiator this weekend. Its not leaking enough to park the car. The level barely drops at all after several days. But in FL being proactive about cooling systems is standard practice.
Will go ahead and swap out the lower rad hose while I have easier access.

Nothing beats a cool evening drive with the top down and some vintage dead tunes going on the bose.

Had a CEL in the miata yesterday. upstream o2 sensor.

easy to get at and around $50.

Sucks that stuff breaks but at least I can fix most of this car myself and there's no monthly payment or full coverage insurance to deal with.

I love miatas.. they are a BLAST to drive.. friend of mine had a Mazda-Speed ... he borrowed my pickup truck a lot in summer and would give me the mazda.. that car was fun to buzz around in! ..

We like this car enough that eventually I'd like to get another one.
Its simply the best handling, funnest to drive car I've ever experienced. At 39 years old you can tell how happy I am to finally own a sports car. Closest thing to this I've ever had was my 91 Integra and this is soooo much better.

I barely fit in ours. The seat is as far back as it will go and I still have to think about my positioning a bit. Anyone over 5'10" isn't going to have such a good time. Some guys even cut out the seat foam to buy an extra inch of space.

YEah ours has a new compressor and is ice cold. There's no cabin air filter on these so I guess every so often you clean it all out?

cars for years didnt have cabin air filters.. the fins were designed far enough apart that as long as you didnt have a bunch of long-haired dogs in the car with the AC on recirc or smoke in it they didnt clog up a lot..

I started working on the Mazda today.
Got the old radiator and hoses out. Spent two hours trying to fit the new rad. I ended up unmounting the ac condenser and remounting it with the brackets reversed. That bought me a few inches. The condenser is leaning forward a few degrees but that shouldn't hurt anything. The guys on the miata forum just bend everything but I wanted it done right.

The new rad fits and looks great. I'll wake up in the morning, smoke a fatty then commence to puttin it all back together. The rad came with a cap that's a couple lbs heavier. I guess I'll run that. The ricer guys all do lol.
I'm beat. Somehow all that took up my whole afternoon.

I have been looking at Miata's for several years but haven't pulled the trigger.

Maybe selling my Chevy truck would make enough room in the driveway and $ in the bank to make it happen.

I got it all buttoned back together and even did a few extra things, like replace the breather tube and detail the areas that are hard to reach.

Burped the cooling system and now I'm about to relax and smoke a jay.

Will see how it does when I make a dispensary run this afternoon.

Will post a few pics later but the new rad looks really sweet.
