Help. How to prime because u ran out of diesel

I usually can prime my 1992 bus. But now I have a 2001 bluebird with a Cummings engine in the front. I am
In Joshua tree California. If anyone is nearby. I added 12 gallons of diesel. I already filled the filter. A can't find a pump ... I found a little lever on left side of engine that when I trigger it. Diesel flows out a little rubber tube to the ground. Is that suppose to happen? The engine is not starting just keeps turning over. Help!!! How can I get it running again ?

Sometimes there is a hand pump on the filter. Pump it till you feel resistance. If no pump then it can take a while before diesel makes it all the way to the injectors. It helps to crack the injection line at the injector and crank until you see fuel. (With air in the injection lines it can compress and push the diesel back in the IP if it is not new or in good shape) Then tighten them a little and get the engine running. Do not start longer then 20 to 30 sec at a time to avoid starter motor damage and wait for a couple of minutes between cranks. If you have a battery charger then try to keep the battery full as that is better for the battery and the starter motor.

Idk about the Cummings, but we use ether to get the dump trucks running when the run the tank dry.

Be careful of ether, use very little sprays into the air cleaner just enough to keep it running till it picks up fuel.

What is that little hose that when I pull on lever next to engine. It releases diesel. Lola like a over flow or something. Or is that small runner hose suppose to be connected to something? Or is that normal? I will go take a picture.

The only filter I see is in middle of bus. I cannot find another filter nearer to the engine. Cant find a pump either. But I found this little latch or trigger that releases diesel through a small rubber hose that hangs staight down

Sorry I am not familiar with the cummins but I assume there must be a filter mounted against the engine. Most filter have a de-water section with a little valve that you can use to drain the bottom sediment out of the filter bowl. You are supposed to do that once a month or so to be sure that you do not get water in the injection pump.

I would *NOT* use starting fluid in a Cummins in a bus unless there's a tag/plate with instructions on how to do it. Most say not to and for a very good reason! The 5.9 Cummins has a preheater grid that can ignite the starting fluid in the intake system, a Bad Thing. (I'm not sure about the 8.3)
