Hey y'all from Portland

So just bought our skoolie it's a 29ft 2001 Flatnose with 5.9 Cummins 24v.


Have to drive it up from Utah at the start of April; but currently looking for a place to store and work on it somewhere in Portland. Or the surrounding area.

Any tips friends?

move if you can and have it where you live as it will get done quicker. my time for working on ours is limited as i drive a truck over the road. i tried storing it at a other location but found that wasted my time as i had to pick up all tools and lock up every nite. we moved and sometimes if i feel good ill work late on it and i like getting up and starting early right away

I thought you were going to say because Portland is well on it's way to being one of the least desirable cities in the country. Imagine having all of the expense, crime, and bad policies as a California city, but none of the good weather.

Sorry for the ribbing. In all honesty, if I lived in Portland, I would not even buy a bus unless I already had a free place to store it, preferably next to where I live, as another member suggested. Other forum members have listed the hundreds of dollars a month that they are spending to store their bus in Portland, Seattle, or California. Too much wasted money for my taste.

I did not mean out of your area just find a place where you can work on it like we did. I know that there are some problems in Portland and the media must sensationalize them even worse as to get ratings. I am privileged to some real info as to what goes on as i have a daughter there . I will be on the road most of the year but will live there when not travelling

I agree that the news media over reports on happenings in Portland, and any politically charge event, to increase ratings. It is still a fact that property and rent are very expensive compared to the rest of Oregon, and crime/riots happen more frequently there than at the state or national average.
With that being said, obviously there is a major draw to live there, or there would not be so many people. To each their own.

Honestly love the PNW and Portland too. Just wish they were a little more actually progressive. But that's just the US for you... lol.

Currently looking at renting out a warehouse space to work on the conversion; seems like a much cheaper option than an actual RV lot.

I had a friend who was a master boatbuilder in Portland. He got a bus and space to work on it near the Columbia where they work on boats. Sorry, I don’t know the exact location.

Just so I'm clear, you said "hello to Portland" yet you are thinking of moving to Corvallis or Eugene. Is that correct?

As I'm sure you know Corvallis is about an hour and a half and Eugene close to 2 hours south of Portland. So recommendations of places in Portland may not be helpful.

I think if you're going to be in the corvallis/Eugene area, it's got a fair amount of Open country around it. so I don't think you'll have much of a problem finding a place that you could store that size of bus where you choose to buy / rent.

When I lived in Eugene we would go out to Goshen or even Harrisburg for very cheap rent. Or even closer in around Glenwood. But that was 35-40 years ago. A couple of friends moved out to West Eugene so they could buy a cheaper property to work on cars. Another friend had a used logging truck dealership in Glenwood with full size repair shop and paint shop. That space would have been ideal for skoolies. It was sitting unused for years after the end of the logging boom. A 40 foot bus would easily fit in the paint shop. He would let me paint my cars. Ive not found another shop like that since then.
Another option is the derelict dairy farms outside of town. There’s big buildings sitting unused. Ive rented very cheap space at 3 former dairy farms. Another industry that’s gone through big changes.

the op is not moving i am. going to retire there . i will park on my daughters property when she buys, in one of the 2 areas. im currently in davenport iowa

Oregon

I moved to Oregon 4 years ago. Im in Grant's Pass buy more towards Merlin. Im in the woods living in my 2004 Thomas 40 footer. I got lucky and found a ranch property I live for free in exchange for work around the property. And im not asked to do alot. I got very lucky. But I would not for a second consider moving to Portland if I didn't have a spot for bus. Its damn near impossible to find parking for a car that's not a pay to park spot. You will not find a spot for bus. But I have no regrets moving here and wish I had done so sooner.
