HF cutoff wheels?

Used the one on the right to cut out seat bolts. One on left is new. Perhaps it's because I use the thin cutoff wheels for the 4 1/2" grinder?View attachment 21695

Cutting bolts with 1/16 is probably why you went through to many.
I used a grinder disc on those. The grinder discs last a LOT longer!

I've been using these from Home Depot:

A pack of 10 was reasonable. I have gone through a few of them but I've cut a lot of steel. None have broken.

Used 1/8 on the bolts. The 1/16 has been on the floors. So far I just counted 25 completed patches lol. That doesn't include the ones I've cut out and haven't sealed. The bolts used half a 1/8 disk..

I have a buisness doing metal fabrication, hf wheels are terrible compared to good quality ones. I can make one good wheel last longer than the whole pack of hf. If you are only using them one or twice a year they are great. If you are going to do a lot of cutting go to a weld shop and ask them for their recommendations. That being said, if it is your first time using a grinder you should get the hf ones to practice. Please wear a full face shield, that wheel is spinning at more than 10,000 rpm and if you bend it sideways in the metal it explodes and flys everywhere.

Great advice! In my early 20’s I worked for a shipping company in Seattle that repaired their own containers. There were a couple crane operators that kept us busy. I did quite a bit of grinding. One of the old welders had one of his helmets permanently hanging on the break room wall. It had half of a wheel lodged in it from a blow out. If he wasn’t wearing it, he’d still have pieces of that disc affixed to his cheek bone. Use face shield for sure & always keep your face out of the line of fire! I let my 16yo son grind, but I won’t let him cut until I get a good, safe opportunity to show him how to use one of those discs.
