How to increase torque?

I have seen lots of threads telling people how to get more hp out of their engine. Does an increase in hp automatically mean an increase in torque? I was under the impression that increase torque improved mpg.

most often turning up the fuel gives your more torque as well.. diesels put out their most torque at lower RPM's so thats why the MPG's are best in a diesel thats running at lower RPMs without being Lugged..

turning up the fuel usually will Not result in an overall MPG increase as people will tend to utilize that extra power for acceleration into traffic or running faster up hills etc.. however you can see net gains at cruise speeds as you can find that you run in a higher gear without being lugged.

most of our diesels here on the forum peak out their torque rating in that 1400-1800 RPM range..thats the place you want to be at cruise speeds..

More torque will move a given load with less effort, so (in theory) you should see a little better mpg. But, as Christopher noted, the added "pull" is usually consumed by the right foot. Keeping the engine in its' sweet spot is where you will see optimal mpg's. That is why you always hear big rigs shift so early and so often.
