If you had the chance to get some spare parts, what would you take?

Soon i will have access to an international school bus that is nearly identical to mine (2003 amtran, not sure the pass # or engine/trans specs) that i can salvage parts from. Not sure if its running or not, but given what its been used for i doubt it. What parts would you salvage given the change? I would like to have some spares, as well as replace a few things on mine...



As of now, im planning on pulling the gauge cluster, all the dashboard electrical components (switches, fuse blocks, etc.), headlight, flashers, turn signals, brake lights, strobe unit, windows, headlight reflective trim, compressor, coolant hoses, coolant booster pump, and maybe alternator and air tank as well? what else should i grab?


i will have more or less unlimited amounts of time to do so before they get rid of it, and i can grab anything short of the tires as it needs to be towed away.

What about wiper arms and motors, washer pump? Heaters and heater motors and switches, Starter and battery cables, ground cables that are from the starter to frame and anything else you see like that. Fuel cap,rad cap or expansion tank, hosing etc. Maybe exhaust parts, muffler, hangers, pipe.
Thinking the injection pump too if being towed. hydraulic/electric brake booster if any and fuel tank. Any belts you see.

I do have the room to store them actually, i have a few barns with some storage space that i can make use of. All good ideas! Ill definitely take as much as i can from this thing, to maximize the possibility of getting spare parts i can use down the road for free.

Driver seat (if it's air) makes a good passenger seat btw

I need to swap the rear-gears on mine, if I can find a 4.44 or 4.10 (preferred) ratio, for a N175 or N190 axle.

If running, I would pull the engine, transmission, and rear axle. As these are the single most expensive parts to replace. The rest can be dealt with, but a failed engine, etc. can kill a project.

I’m assuming the engine is dead based solely on what it was used for, and I can’t pull the rear axle because it needs to be towed away after I’m done with it. I may try to pull the transmission though, now that you mention it...

You don't have to remove the entire axle to salvage the gearset from it. The "chunk" can be removed separately. The axle can still be used to tow away the bus afterwards.

I'd grab the doors too. Never know when something might happen, or it gives you a free set of doors to play with changing the hinges/way they open.
