There's so much I don't know, I wouldn't know where to begin to ask for help from just one section

It would run approx $1000 to replace this pump in a shop

Sadly, I found this to be all too true!

My pump cost $827.34 (incl. core charge). Hopefully I'll get about $350 of that back for the core, but OMG! what a shocker of a charge. Wish I knew about the fuel problem before running through two and a half tanks of diesel! You can betcha I'll NEVER do that again.
