Jake brake

I don't know what transmition you have but I would imagine an exhaust brake isn't going to do a lot for you unless you are.running either a manual transmission or an automatic with lockup. The drive shaft brake.would be a different story.

I do not know of a "Jake brake" available for the 5.9. Exhaust brakes are available, are you specifically looking for a "Jake brake" ?

In time I am looking at adding the Telma retarder for my bus.

I have not yet looked into cost, am hoping to find a used one in a junkyard, but really have not pursued it much. Seems I saw something about new ones being a few thousand or more. Don't quote me for sure on that.

Look in the Dodge aftermarket world. They make a Jacobs brand exhaust brake but can't say it's what you need. Price is probly close to $1500 and up. Wether or not your transmition locks up will dictate if an exhaust brake will even help you. Exhaust brakes are different than Jake brakes. Exhaust brakes just close a valve behind the turbo to create back pressure. The Jake brake alters valve timing mechanically to increase back pressure and ultimately resistance at the flywheel. They don't make a jake brake for the 5.9 that I'm aware of.

There are no currently-available school bus engines that have the option of a true Jake brake (the compression-release brake that Class 8 trucks use). Only Crown and Gillig offered engines with Jakes. Exhaust-restrictors won't slow you down much, and can cause other problems along the way. Telmas are the way to go for serious mountain driving, and I believe that all school buses in CO must have Telmas. If I could get a Focal Telma for a decent price I would consider adding it, even with a perfectly good Jake brake on my bus now.

CO has backed off on the Telmas and now they're only spec'd on mountain buses. Still plenty of those, but not every CO bus has one. I had a 98 shorty with a 545 and no telma and it was from Aurora.

This is a much better price then ebay for us shows. Wonder what import costs would be. I know some time ago the exchange rate was a good bit in our favor, has that evened out?

it seems to be staying at about 25% - one CAD$ = $.75 US +/-
