Keep grinding, or ready-to-treat?

First time grinding rust, and not sure when to stop. Am I supposed to be getting all the red coloration out, or just grinding until I can't flake it off anymore? Seems solid to me.....I pound on it with a hammer and nothing breaks off.

The wire-wheeled area looked the same as the areas around it when I began.

The more you get out the better, but don't obsess about it too bad. Try the ospho out and see how it does.
That one are is definitely clean enough!

With most rust "converters" all you need to do is knock off the loose flakes then treat. They should convert any remaining oxides into a stable compound you can paint over.

Thanks guys....appreciate it! I thought I was okay, but just wanted confirmation from the 'been there done that' folk.

I hope you are wearing a mask and using a lot of open windows, open doors and a fan to keep that dust away from you.
I know it can be tough with inclement weather but breathing the rust dust will put a hurtin on your lungs and everything associated.
Trust me on this one.
I promise you don't want that experience?

Peace out, boy scout.....yes to all of the above except the fan.....and I forgot my bloody earplugs too. I have just enough brain cells left to know I have to take care of them.

Merry Christmas!
