Learning ServiceMaxx 1708?

Hi everyone,
I just picked up a Nexiq USB3 to connect to my 1997 T444e. I’m using the ServiceMaxx 1708 software but I don’t have any documentation for the code. I had an intermittent breakdown 2 weeks ago but neither my BlueFire or the ServiceMaxx show any diagnostic trouble codes? I’m trying to get an idea about repair but so far this isn’t helping. I really need a 5 minute tutorial to make sense of the interface?
Does anyone out there have a good handle on checking DTC codes with this setup? Any help will be appreciated.

Also it's a bit crude, but if you use the push button for codes supplied on those buses, and watch the gauge cluster light counts you can determine codes that way too without a diagnostic tool. That's how I diagnosed my VPM issue originally before I bought a nexiq.
