Looking for not-hipster bus builds

Hey Guys, don't take my frankness for being rude I know everyone loves there own style. I am looking for builds that are not covered in stained wood and corrugated metal. I can only ever find the tiny house style wood covered interiors. I am looking for something action sports inspired or offroad overland. we have been looking at 72 pas bus to convert for our 6 person family. I am looking for something different though. Its going to be our pirate ship...our space exploration rig, and I would like it to reflect that not in a cheesy way, sorta more of a military'esk expedition sorta vibe. I have already done some extensive searching and I know how it goes posting on a forum...someone is always gonna wanna chime in with the "you know there is a search function" haha.

Your inquiry is very vague on what you want. Go to your UserCP and fill out your profile. Then go to the Conversion threads and see if you can find what you're looking for.
 
There really aren't too many hipsters around in here.
There was one guy who used beard oil, but to each their own.

Hippie bus builds some of us are indeed guilty as charged.

Most of the active members of this community are very creative, inventive folks who live active lives. Adventurous folks.

Look around at the various REAL build projects on here and if you don't like what you see build something that represents YOU. We can't do that for ya!

its hard to tell what you really Like without it being described..

im not sure what a 'hipster' build is... or what your flavor is? you say not wood.. but are you glass N chrome, modular (moveable walls), mid-century modern? old american? whats your general style. that you like in a home.. and thats the style you build in a bus..

someone i talked to recently is going to build their bus into a "tiny downtown loft" style with lots of big windows, bright inside colors, metal, and "glass"..

if you can dream it you can build it... Youtube is also a great resource.. lots of people do tours of their busses on youtube, before, during, and after their conversions..

Hey Dangerdad (great username),

We're working on a build right now where the client described his target style as "a cross between a pirate ship and a log cabin".

Still not quite sure what that means, but we're converting a heavy-duty workhorse van into a full-time home. He plans to take it to Mexico to boondock for the next 10 years. The build just started last week so I don't have any good pictures to show, but I think the design is going to come out similar to what you described...everything very functional and tasteful rather than whimsical, off-road and stealth camping capable...in other words a real expedition vehicle.

I'd be happy to chat about design and/or keep you in the loop as this build progresses.
 
Another option for design options is looking at the tiny homes built on trailers to get ideas. Typically similarly sized so a lot of the build ideas will work in a bus. You can remove all the windows, sheet metal over them, and you have a completely fresh canvas to do whatever you can dream of.

also, a lot of people do the wood and corrugated metal stuff because of budget restraints, not because of anything that's hipster related. It's not everyone's cup of tea though so what I'll be using is FRP panels for a shower, and my interior will be painted. Wood designs can actually be more expensive a lot of the time too depending on the wood chosen, but when you can recycle stuff you get for free it looks great when you don't have much money for your build

Ease your exasperation haha, there are I was thinking more of an Earth Rover type interior. Like you would see on a land cruiser with campers built into them. Also it is not lost on me the reasons why others have built their bus they way they did cost, style or otherwise. Just not what I'm looking for and I did look through the project builds on this website. For like two hours. Also had searched Google for the last few weeks still not finding what I'm looking for. I don't want a theme or anything like that just looking for a different approach than just building the inside of my bus into a tiny house style and decore. I admit the hipster moniker was a but insulting I don't know I always assume people have a sense of humor I don't know. But I am just looking for anything out of the schoolie ordinary. Like I think it would be cool to make it have an almost paid guide commercial look inside but maybe not to clinical
 
I am trying to understand. I too am not going for looks but going for functionality. I am not a fan of the re-purposed pallet walls. some other builds use granite counter tops, others use tongue and grove ceiling which in my mind add too much weight. view 100s of builds. save your favorite ideas and create your own....

I'm not if I'm understanding you correctly or not. But I'll take a stab at a few options for ye.
you don't want to use repurposed pallets for walls, pinterest has overflowed and basically tainted this for a lot of people. Nor the Pine T&G panels for the roof. after that you're ok with the look of things?

in that case why not fashion some headliners or wall skins? this would let you use what ever tickles your fancy to seal the vehicle after insulation. then one could have fun with things like parachutes, ranger blanket (AKA Woobie) issued canvas hatch panels etc. if you reside in the states the Mil vehicle boneyards are plentiful you could find almost anything. pieces from a Ma Deuce or M35 may trigger some ideas that aren't as posh as a Rover but built to take a beating.

After that maybe ponder this avenue if you haven't yet.
How creative are you? Can you or someone you know sew? or do you have an in with an upholstery or tent maker?
Start poking around the surplus stores.....?
