National School Bus Yellow

phillbus914,

It wasn't my intention to remark specifically on your post; it was just suppossed to be a general observation.

Just now when I read through the thread I definitely see how you thought I meant to address your post.

I apologize for not making my self more clear; it wasn't my intention to invalidate your observations.

The first couple times I read it I thought you were revering to my post, then I wasn't sure. So I thought I'd make it clear though that I wasn’t trying to tell others to do the same. I was just letting them know that the police seem to have bigger & better things to worry about than us skoolies.

I want to roll my paint on. National School Bus Yellow is not my favorite color. I want a dark forest green with a white top.

I hope to get it painted by January.

Ditto here Pat,

In Wisconsin I recently (august 08') had my Project inspected, I converted the middle brake light and Officer ___________ stated Nope.

Chassis lights are chassis lights.

Safety lights are removed.

National Yellow is now orange and Off white (think you haul)

Upon receipt of the registration and license plates the holes in my forhead became driving lights. I am aware of the fact that in WI lights forward facing are not allowed above 54" but in a late night run to houghton MI for a Closed road race, hitting one deer is one to many. LIke driving 56 MPH I will take my chances.

I went through some of this same stuff with a Medic One truck. The forward-facing red lights absolutely must go, and driving lights are a no-go because of max height limitations. All those driving lights you used to see on the roll bar of 4x4 pickups were illegal for the same reason; that's why you saw all those yellow moon-eyes covers over them most of the time.
Sure, you can get away with lots of stuff... but why be a ticket target?

National bus yellow sux it powerful sux I'm paint'n my rig Miller welding machine blue,it will match the machine on the trailer I will be pulling. And the stop sign is gone as far as the lights go they got fed. regs. on those. About 25 yrs ago I stopped on the road with a clogged fuel filter,I made the mistake of turning on the eight ways I was informed soon there after by a Ohio state trooper this was not the proper pocedure and not to do it again. I begged his forgivness and promised to never do it again. I found the fuse and removed it the next day. In my travels on the road I have found that if you make a attemp to comply the man will help with the rest of it 90 percent of the time. They don't want to hassel you any more than you want be hassled. Unless its 1968 and you got shoulder length and your driving a old school bus painted like a american flag. Russell

Paint: I intend to paint mine like a carrier borne airplane. Sky blue bottom, Navy blue top, no distinct dividing line. Yellow arrow with Orange RESCUE pointing to the door handle. no wings or propeller, that would be mega-doofic.

8 way lights: Outdoor speakers

I have read and heard various ways to prep the bus for the new paint. Everything from just wiping down with thinner to full blown sanding. What works best?

Iowa Code 321.373.6:
----------------------------------------------------------
No vehicle except a school bus shall be operated on a public highway if the vehicle is painted the color known as national school bus glossy yellow. A school bus which has been permanently converted for a purpose other than transporting pupils to or from school shall be painted a color other than national school bus glossy yellow, and shall have the "school bus" signs, stop arm, and the special signal lamps removed.
----------------------------------------------------------

By "special signal lamps" I assume they mean the upper warning lights on the front and back.

Well I have the front set up for driving lights and the back are all so hooked up to my brake lights. I called the WASH state patrol and talked to some one and he said that as long as the one's I have hooked up to the brakes don't flash it is ok, and as fare as the front go's no forward facing red.

As far as my front overhead lights, I was thinking of changing them to clear or amber driving lights on another circuit. Kind of like off road lights on steroids.

look at soom of my pics you'll see that is how my lights are. but they are the same as my head lights in the grill. they are sealed beam head lights, i have 10 on the monster 6 in frunt and 4 in back.

Here's the lowdown I got from UTB when I bought my bus....
<snip>
The bus cannot be NSBC or any other shade of yellow that might easily be confused. Also, all markings that say school bus or a district must be removed. He also recommended against putting something like "Cool Bus" on the panel between the 8 ways as this could be misconstrued from a distance.
<snip>

Dang! :( I wanted to capitalize on the fact that school and skunky have the same number of letters so that the lettering could look like what you see on my avatar. My girlfriend and I like to imagine the following conversation in a car some distance back of our future skoolie:
Front seat occupant (leaning forward and squinting): That school bus say "SKUNKY BUS" on the back!"
Spouse (condescending tone): No it doesn't! I keep telling you it's time to get your eyes re...checked..." (Car draws nearer) "Oh never mind."
Front seat occupant: "Told ya!"

It's our "advertisement" for Skunk Haven, Inc., in Ohio (www.skunkhaven.net). Only the rear would be original colors, with the yellow fading to white as it goes around the corners to the sides, which would be custom-RV style in...you guessed it...black-and-white. Some factory RVs have swoosh patterns that resemble skunk stripes. :) We've gotten quite a few positive reactions to the concept.

Also, as long as the bus was still yellow (when I drove it home and for the time being), I need to stop at ALL railroad crossings in the state and put on my flashers. It is illegal for a vehicle that looks like a bus to blow by apparently. The fine is steep if a cop or railroad personal catch just you. If they think you endangered anyone else's life (passengers or otherwise) it quickly rises.

That side-effect occurred to me. It also occurred to me to put the words "RECREATIONAL VEHICLE" in a visible location, like above the emergency door.

In any case, I'm going to use painted skale...um, scale...mockups so if it ends up looking terrible, we'll find out before we're looking askance at the real thing..

Nebraska Revised Statute 79-606: Sale of school bus; alteration required; violation; penalty.

"When any vehicle with a manufacturer's rated seating capacity of eleven or more passengers used for transportation of students is sold and used for any other purpose than for transportation of students, such vehicle shall be painted a distinct color other than that prescribed by the State Board of Education and the stop arms and system of alternately flashing warning signal lights on such vehicle shall be removed. It shall be the purchaser's responsibility to see that the modifications required by this section are made. Any person violating this section shall be guilty of a Class V misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, be fined not less than twenty-five dollars nor more than one hundred dollars."

They don't specify whether the entire vehicle's color has to be changed but one can assume that, or at least that the color must be changed so that it obviously isn't a school bus in service. If I decide to keep the basic rear-end design I probably will use either white or a shade of yellow that's far enough away from "official" NSBY.

If it still passes off as an in-service bus while I'm taking it home, I'll be sure to stop at those railroad crossings.

I'm thinking they be trying to stop predators...Idk...just a guess...I'd already decided I'd remove the "eyebrow lights" and the stop sign

a year later and we're still yellow...a couple good things about yellow...other drivers tend to be more careful around us...and school bus drivers wave as we pass...very nice.

I think it's a case of "you haven't gotten caught yet. I imagine it's got to be a prick cop to pull you for the color of your vehicle as though being Yellow some how makes a difference, ludicrous.

Whaaat, the fine is only $25-$100. You could get an awful lot of tickets before exceeding the cost of a paint job.

Seems strange that they would require you to remove the flashing warning lights as though we skoolies don't need the attention
