Members offered practical advice for a high school senior interested in converting a class B school bus for travel and adventure. The consensus is to prioritize pre-2004 buses due to simpler emissions systems and to avoid the AT545 transmission for frequent travel. Welcome Ninthwheeler. My choice was for a shuttle bus conversion.
Thanks 😊 I’ve been looking on Marketplace and there are a ton of buses to choose from. Wondering if I should go south to buy one though. Less rust. If I do, would I need a CDL to drive it home? I may just take the CDL class near me just to get experience driving something bigger than my suv. I used to drive a truck with a trailer and my horse trailer to events at work so hauling isn’t completely new to me. It’s just been a while lol

You won't need a CDL since you're not using the vehicle for commercial purposes, just like the owners of massive RVs don't need anything more than a regular driver's license.

You'll need insurance and the New York state 'in-transit permit' which allows you legally move the vehicle into the state without registration.

I live in California where rust is almost completely unknown. I recommend strongly that you consider a rust-free vehicle. Even though there is greater up-front cost of travel and added uncertainty buying something at a distance, you'll get a rig that doesn't require you to sink oodles of hours into just to make it whole.
