New DFW Area Skoolie Project

Hello Skoolie Community!

Thank you all for making such an awesome resource for us to use at Skoolie.net! We have been lurking for a while but have finally decided to make the jump and kick off our own Skoolie project. We are a family of 6 and we are currently bidding on a 1997 International 84 passenger bus with 200k miles, a DT466 engine, and what I visually believe is the MT643 transmission. I just wanted to say hello and to ask for any advice or thoughts that you all may have as we start down this path.

Also, does anyone have or know of a spot that we could park and work on our skoolie for a few months in the DFW area? We are in the Grapevine/Hurst area and we are exploring what our options are.

Quick question to the community, there is a chance that we can keep the bus in our driveway over the next 2 months during the conversion which would be awesome if we can work it out. However, we are concerned that the concrete may not hold up and as renters... that is a no go if so.

Has anyone attempted using plywood under the wheels to distribute the weight or any other tricks to protect concrete? How likely is it that the weight of the bus will crack the concrete driveway? Is it a legitimate concern or are we in the clear and just overthinking it? The GVWR is 31,720 but I don't know what the actual empty weight is yet... probably around 15k lbs. right?

Maybe I should be posting this in its own thread? Apologies if so...

any thing you can put under the wheels to help spread the weight will help prevent damage to the concrete - ( I don't suppose you know the thickness of the concrete? ) - a couple of 2" x 12', 6' long under the back wheels would help a lot

Thanks Sleddgracer, the boards are a good idea. I'm going to see if I can get a measurement on the thickness tomorrow. Don't know that it matters but I moved the original question to our conversion thread at Link to keep things organized.
