New roof built up roof?

Hi All,

I'd like to explore the possibilities of cutting off the roof at the window sills and building a new flat roof to maximize interior volume and height (I'm 6'3"). Id like to have adequate insulation in the roof (at least 3" to 6"). It would also maximize solar cell area.

The new upper walls and roof could be built up out of aluminum, steel stock or even wood like many motorhomes are still being built.

Are there any threads where someone has done this?

I trying to find out if anyone has ever cut of the existing roof at the window sill and built a new roof (perhaps a flat roof) to whatever height they wished.

I'd like to see a build with pictures if possible.

A search hasn't turned up anything for me. Plenty of roof raises but no custom flat roofs that I could find.

At that point why not just buy a flat roof RV?

RV flat roofs are notorious for leaking - water pools on them, then works it way into the walls and rots out the whole structure. Curved roofs are intrinsically stronger and won't allow water to collect on them. Why not do a roof raise, keeping the original roof itself, then you can make a flat ceiling inside to hide insulation/wiring/aircon/etc? That has been done before. Or buy a low-floor transit bus - lots of headroom, flat-ish roof and ceiling, then you can make a floor above the original floor to hide tanks etc below and still keep enough headroom. Lostranger has done that on the Nomadicista forum with a Gillig LF.
