Hello,

I bought my bus and was able to get it insured with progressive but for over 5000 a year which is obviously a lot. i did this simply so I could drive it home. I have sense got it titled and registered in NJ as a personal passenger vehicle, but because the GVWR is over 26001 lbs (it's 33,000) insurances are all saying even though its registered personal, the weight is to high for a personal policy, though I do have a certified weight slip with the weight under 21,000 lbs (like I said the bus is as of now just empty). does anyone have any insight?

the reason the commercial is so high is because as of july 2024, NJ says that all commercial vehicles over 26001 lbs need to have 1.5 MIL in liability, so i had to have that with the commercial insurance, but now because my weight is kicking me out of the personal policies, it is still requiring that.

I went thru the process of converting my title to a motorhome title which took some time but not horrible. Once I did that Stare Farm insured me for just over $200 year. Not sure what you are planning but NJ is really tough unless you jump thru their hoops. Good luck

thank you! I'm curious, what hoops specifically did you have to jump through? was it certain things you needed to have like running water, ect.?

You might want to call Progressive commercial insurance. They have a policy called, "Commercial for Private use. Runs us $600/yr for a 1995 Eagle coach, 2000 Bluebird and 1998 International RE 84 Pass Bus. That's 3 busses for $600 total. This is New Mexico and they have a similar million dollar policy requirement for commercial trucks, but that is in regards to commercial uses.
