Non-affiliated buses for sale - thread

That is an interesting re-power. That isn't a rear engine Crown, it is a mid-engine Crown. To have an ISC mounted amidships is a different kettle of fish compared to all other mid-engine Crowns.

I would be interested to see how it was mounted. I see it has a different louvered panel on the curbside that was usually where an A/C condenser was mounted on A/C equipped Crowns but I didn't see any evaporators on the interior shots.

Anything newer than 2007 model year, some built as early as spring 2006, are all smogged. That means they have some way of treating the exhaust to to make it "cleaner". IHC/IC used EGR technology to take care of the exhaust emissions. Short answer is it didn't work very well.

If the bus has any version of the MaxxForce engines it will be a garage queen and very, very expensive to use and maintain. Part of the problem was IHC engines were always designed to run cool. In the past you really had to screw up the cooling system to ever seen engine temps go over 180*. The MaxxForce engines were set up to run normally at 210* to make the EGR work better. The original design that was set up to run at 160* just didn't translate well to 210*.

One reason newer buses are selling for dirt cheap is no one, especially not any of the exporters or second tier operators, have any interest in purchasing a smogged bus.

IMHO, I would avoid a newer bus.

I can second this, I've worked with Diesel Particulate Filter and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst equipped Maxxforce 7s (See also, the 6.4 Powerstroke) and the Maxxforce 9. 7s had constant electrical harness and PCM problems. The 9s always clattered very loudly and ran poorly. DPFs and DOC's plugged very often and those are expensive to remove and clean, let alone replace when they're pushed too far.

All buses have had the engines replaced between 100,000 and 200,000 miles. Some are at 320,000 miles now and asking for another engine. The company I was working for somehow wanted to keep these buses for another 10 years. Despite most of the buses costing as much as $10 a mile in just maintenance. Avoid an International after 2007 period.

The newest buses from International have 6.7 Cummins, but only because school bus fleets were refusing to buy buses with Maxxforce engines which I think says a lot about them. I might bite on a 6.7 tho, we had a lot less problems with those in Freightliners, mostly EGR problems but they were in the shop much less often.

In case anyone is looking for an older FE full size with the ISC engine (it seems like these are rare, and I didn't even know an FE ISC was an option until recently):

A bit pricey, but I know she will come down to at least 8,500. I was in Phoenix last week checking out some of their other buses, and probably would have bought this one if I was looking for a full size, but I wanted a little shorter.

They have a few other similar buses available right now as well.

Don't want to fiddle with windows? Love the color purple? Want a DT466 with an AT545?

I almost bought this one, but given how much mountain driving I'm likely to do, I shied away from the 545. If you're a flatlander, this should be great! Ken and Lisa were very nice to work with and even offered to meet me halfway. They're in Akron, OH.

27 year old bus from Pennsylvania, I'd be concerned about rust. Especially after sitting that long. But the price is right. Hate to think what the tow bill would be if you can't hotwire it or get it to run. And getting a title could be a major issue. Virginia has very lax laws on abandoned vehicle title application, however.
