Hello All,
My wife and I are looking into building a skoolie, but are just entering into the research phase.

I personally don't know much about vehicles (although I'm ready to learn), and don't know what type of transmission, engine, etc. I should be looking for.

I'm not fully sure what determines the engine and transmission in a school bus, but have listed a few things we'd be looking for. (1) Would love to be able to go up somewhat steep inclines without having to worry about making it up (2) Size: 22 - 30 feet (3) Flat-Nose.

Would love any tips, tricks, and advice related to engines, transmission, or anything else you may deem pertinent in this beginning phase.

Appreciate all the help!

Cdl and non cdl is one thing to consider. Air brakes being the switchover in most states. Gear ratio is another big one. Some busses are not geared to do highway speeds all day long or barely at all in some cases. Gas or diesel? Just a start on your pondering.

Welcome to the site Cameron Finley.

The answers you seek could fill numerous pages of thread due to one's personal preferences, experiences, etc.
Fortunately if you peruse the site for awhile, you can get answers just reading the numerous posts that cover your concerns.

Look up posts made by member Cheese_Wagon. He has put a few quick primers on bus buying, driving, etc. that might help you narrow down your choices.

Most important tidbit I can give you is don't rush into any buy, and make sure you fully evaluate the physical condition of the body and undercarriage, as well as the engine and transmission.

If you lack the skills/knowledge to evaluate properly and thoroughly, find someone who can do the critical pre-buy eval.
Otherwise you could easily get burned for the purchase price, as well as potential high repair costs in the event the bus you buy isn't road ready and safe.
