Oil change tips on DT466E

What would you recommend if we're storing the bus through the winter and we changed the oil just before a 6,000mi trip? Should we change it when we open it up in the Spring before any short trips? We won't be taking any long trips for a while, so I'm wondering if the condensation build up would be a good reason to change it now or later?

My opinion? Fill the diesel tank fully, trickle charge the battery and make sure you're coolant is properly mixed. Then leave it alone until you plan on properly using it.

Starting and idling the engine, even on fast idle, will produce more condensation than just sitting there for the winter. You won't get condensation unless you have temperature differences and the ambient temperature is above freezing. Unless you're actually taking it for a drive I'd say not to worry about it.

When it's time to go for a drive do a full circle check and take it for a good drive.

2 oil filters?!

My 'New' 1990 International 3800 DT444 (I'm assuming), surprised me when I looked under the hood. It has TWO giant Baldwin BF588 oil filters!

This will be its first oil change since I've had it. Anyone else have 2 oil filters? Thats a LOT of filtering and oil!!

What do you all recommend?

the DT mechanicals dio have 2 oil filters.. some people used coarser filters for fuel to alleviate air being sucked in since the fuel system on a mechanical DT is negative pressure and not positive...

Synthetic oil?

Does anybody use synthetic Oil for their bus? Or is this not a thing? I change my cars oil, but this is going to be the first time changing the Bus Oil. I have a 1999 DT466e. I have a bit of blowby happening and want to get everything working as smoothly and nicely as possible. I would rather put in a bit more expensive oil and have the engine last longer and run better while we take it all over the U.S.

Please give me some advice.

Thanks.

Also any advice on where to purchase tires. We had some dry rot on 2 of the rear wheels that split into a big crack on our shakedown trip. do I need to replace all 4 back wheels? and then what about the front 2? They look ok with no splitting, But is there any treatment anybody would recommend.

Not mine specifically, it's too old to see a benefit. But on a lot of diesel engines, especially ones with heui injectors, I recommend going to a 5w40. The difference in startability is obvious with the switch.

Synthetics are great, but if your engine is already worn with a bunch of blowby, no oil will fill the gaps caused by missing metal.

And at the end of the day, fresh dino oil is nearly always better then a worn out synthetic.

I'm with Christopher on the Rotella T4. That's my go-to as well. An 18.9L/5 US gallon bucket can be bought on sale for $75CAD easy.

I was in a rush a while ago and purchased a bucket of Mobil Delvac 15w40 that was on sale for my last oil change. That stuff stinks! I've never encountered an oil that has that smell. Maybe it'll work better for it? :)

I've heard that the oil should be changed at a given mileage or annually. If the vehicle has been sitting in a garage with new oil I might not worry about it, but there's always the chance the coolant has been slowly leaking into the bottom of the oil pan or whatever. Might be worth doing an oil change annually under all circumstances.

The kind of oil you run will not really affect how much blowby you're experiencing. I personally run whatever's on sale that rated appropriately. Usually Rotella these days.

if you already have some blowby then when you change your oil its definitely time to take a sample and send it off for analysis.
Blackstone labs will send you sample bottles, return shipping lables and packaging and directions to obtain the best samples and a full report of what they find for about 20$ a sample

Another vote for the Rotella T4. And be ready with a BIG catchpan....7 gallons takes up a lot of space.

And the Blackstone Labs analysis is well worth it........$28 for peace of mind in my case, but also would have been a cheap price to pay to find out if I had issues.
