Paint for bus.

I was at Home Depot looking at paint. I asked the paint guy about coloring the Rustoleum. He said it couldn't be done, but I could use the Behr paint. If I used the oil based primer, he said it would be durable. Can this be so? House paint will hold up on the bus?

well oil based pretty much soaks into anything. had some vandals use some on statues around here once. took lots of time and money and equipment to get it off.

The primer is oil based. The paint is water based latex. My knowledge is very limited when it comes to paint.

I painted my 1966 camper twice. I used enamel oil based house paint.

First, I thoroughly cleaned it with TSP. Back then you could get real TSP (tri sodium phosphate). It was fairly caustic. You had to wear rubber gloves. Now they have what is called TSP substitute.

After the surfaces were cleaned, I combined one quart of Penetrol to one gallon of paint. Penetrol is basically linseed oil.

I used a brush and a roller to apply the paint. It was a durable and shiny paint job that lasted years.

After the paint dried for a week, you could even wax the vehicle with car wax.

We used ACE Hardware's "RUST STOP". It can be custom tinted. Similar properties as Rustoleum. I used a foam roller. Didn't thin it at all. Also used it as the 1st coat on faux finishing the metal ceiling inside the bus.

We painted the Class C with a paint brush and regular latex house paint (semi gloss trim). Had to use an aluminum primer under the paint. Did that back in 2007(?) and it still looks good. The bus is steel.

I did mine, didnt prep anything, just brushed it on. Thinned it a little because it was in the upper 40's. low 50's. Hold on real well. Its been a year and a half I think now. Ace Rust Stop.

what i used was a garage floor epoxy paint from home depot to paint my bus. its only about $22 gallon around here. i only needed 2 gallons, one white, one black, to paint my bus (short bus) all i did was wash it with a good dish soap using bundles of steel wool instead of a sponge to remove all waxes, tar, etc. then after it dried i just used a roller to apply. it took 3 coats, and take your time! the finish is great. exactly what i wanted. i used a cloth roller because i wanted a "textured" finish, but i used a foam roller on the whole roof and it worked great, nice, smooth, and shiny. they will color the garage epoxies any color you want also. i kept the roof paint a bright white, but the rest i went with a kind of semi-gloss charcoal black. with this too, it creates a nice a hardened finish for the paint. we used to paint the equipment and trailers for our fire department with it as well. hope this helps!

Like lorna and opus we went with the ace rust stop paint. Custom tinted and rolled it on. It's been about 6 months. So far so good.

Yes, you can use a latex paint on top of an oil primer, but not the other way around. I'd pick up a spray gun, too, if you don't have one. You can get a pretty good one from Harbor Freight for ~$25, and it'll make your life a **** of a lot easier, as well as your coat both prettier, and stronger.
