Maybe the readers would benefit from definitions of "compound" and "buff".Yes, I buff out all paint finishes.
So to your question, I don't know of any painted finish I wouldn't compound then wax (exception being paint rolled on the walls of your home).

From my experience, "rubbing compound" is the roughest grit, and is the first grit used on lacquer finishes. Afterward, progressively finer grits are used.
Also from experience, 30 years ago when cars had some sort of "base/clear" finish, I watched someone put said "compound" on a new-ish car hood and ruin the paint on the hood. It scratched it terribly. And, AFAIK, no auto maker was doing any work on the paint after it was sprayed, and those finishes were ready for some wax before sale.
