Please please help!!! Might buy tomorrow.

I’ve got a manual on the way. First thing I bought!
So considering it’s just a sleeve, and a ring, I’m still going in deep to get at one correct? I think it’s not a bad thought to go at that first. Maybe I’ll get lucky?

Another thing. What do you mean by oil to the sump? Oil into the coolant didn’t seam to be present. That’s how I generally ruled out the cooler but I may habe missed something?

With the oil pan off I noticed that the second from front cylinder was leaking on the outside of what I believe was the sleeve.

Thanks for the input!!! I’m scared, but optimistic to take this on. Just gotta get it home... or something like that.

I mean find where the oil from the oil cooler returns to the sump, this is where to look for antifreeze when pressure testing it.

I did take a better look at your pictures, and see from where the drips of antifreeze are that it is likely a liner o-ring. A scope that would allow better viewing at the bottom of the liner would be a good confermation. You can get one for $40 or so from Amazon and it links through WiFi to your phone.

It is a big job as you do have to pull the head to remove liners. If the engine is high mileage or has a lot of wear then putting new cylinder kits in might be worth it. If there is clear crosshatching and the liners(and pistons) measure within specs then just new o-rings will work too.

There is also a small chance antifreeze has corroded the liner making it leak. If this is the case replace all liners. This is why it is nice to get a good look at the source of the leak so you know exactly what the issue is.

Wet liner engines can be prone to liner pitting if the antifreeze is not tested and supplements added, or changed regularly.

But without it you wouldn't be a welder. So it's just schooling expenses!

I had a couple of cars and trucks when I was younger.. Looking back I write them off as educational lessons. Trouble shooting, Investing, Wrenching, Project Management, .............

I used to get so mad when I would "lose" a few hundred bucks on stuff. No I watch people lose hundreds of thousands on businesses and bad investments.
I feel like those "lessons" that cost me a few hundred dollars and a couple hundred hours of labor where dirt cheap.

The issue that I’m confused about is that I’m in Utah and have to get it up to Montana. Should I call them in Montana and see what they need? Or take it up with Utah?

Get insurance, or make sure you're covered by your current insurance, and then drive it as is without drawing any unneeded attention to yourself.

I think it's a gray area that most police don't want to deal with.

Many on here have purchased and then driven a bus across the country back home without issue.

I agree, insure it and drive it. I've driven 2 buses fully cross country and others shorter distances with no tags. Drive like a sane person and you'll have no worries.

Some states don't bother with temp tags and as you're passing through, and should an officer stop you, just explain it was recently purchased, passing through, and your home state doesn't issue temp tags. Keep all your documentation including insurance with you during the trip.

Honestly, if I was going to disassemble a DT466 for liners at 145K miles, it might make sense to just go on and do the full rebuild on it. You already have the head off and have the cylinder liners out, not much more to do to just go on and rebuild it.

That’s the plan as of right now. It makes the most sense. Especially because it’s low miles. I have a friend who works for international corporate in Illinois that said the same thing.

This is the link to the build thread, and I’ll be posting the updates on there. Thank you all for your help!!!
