propane problem - sputtering and smoking

is it real cold outside when this happens?

if yes, then your tank is to cold and you need a propane tank heater blanket. in cold temps, a small propane tank won't vaporize fast enough to supply the needed fuel below 32 degrees.

whole page of nothing.

Issue is regulated pressure. Chances are the regulator vent is plugged at minimum. regulator bad at max.
It's not your damn hoses or stove.
If your regulator vent is plugged flames will lift off the burner to start then back burn into the burner as pressure decreases.

This is why i stay off the forums more often than not. Takes 36 pages to get a straight answer and then your so over loaded it seems like gibberish.
Must be old school. I don't answer unless I have a clue.

MudHut - Presentation is everything. Here you have a potentially tasty nugget of information and choose to serve it up on a garbage can lid. Negative style points on this one.

It amazes me when someone can drop into a thread and diagnosis, trouble shoot and.. find the ultimate solution right of the bat. With out even fixing the problem.. !
It is either a profound shinning intellect made up of insight, prophecy and possibly magic that lowly humans can't fathom. Or a complete idiot who makes a guess in the troubleshooting process and wraps it in divine ego.

Maybe you can change your avatar to a green check mark so we always know that the solution has been found and not waste time on the rest.

Tank freezing is because you exceed the capacity of the vapor bell (top of tank) or you very low on LP. Common or tanks to freeze around the liquid portion of the tanks in sub freezing temperatures. You should still be able to maintain 10" WC though.
If not you have the wrong tanks. The reason many rv tanks are horizontal is not so they fit but that you can have more vapor area in a small tank.
Check how many Btu's you require and size your tanks accordingly.

Sorry, the issue is obvious to anyone who does the work for a living.
I'm licensed up to building railcar transfer stations and marine systems.

But please feel free to home depot your own flammable gas system.
In time we will become like Asian countries where gas explosions are commonplace.

Meanwhile the poor guy needing help has been chasing hoses, fittings and replacing equipment when in fact he may just need to brush a mud dauber nest from his regulator. It not your money so no worries.

I'm ok where I stand. thanks

Exactly. He's even tried 2 different regulators and he's still got issues. I can't think of anything left to replace. Maybe there's a crummy valve somewhere in his piping? If it were me I'd hook the tank up to the stove with as little as possible in between and work my way back from there.
Edit: As a matter of fact, I think both of those stoves work with the small 1lb propane tanks that you can get for like 3 bucks. Screw one of them on and test the stove with that.

In trouble shooting I do not put much weight on someone who is willing to toss out a ultimate solution to a problem from an end users description. That's basically the same as a mechanic or doctor giving a diagnosis without seeing the car or patient. I usually only see young “mechanics” do this, usually at Speedy Auto Parts or similar places.

I have followed this thread because I have had propane stoves and gas do the same thing, it is fairly common if you use camp stoves enough. I feel like there is some great educated feedback in the tread posts.

I have the same problem right now, I am pretty sure it is a clogged burner because if I use the burner next to it, it burns just fine. But- You never know until it is fixed. and you take the time to fix it

All input and discussion has some value for us in educating each other.

Would be great if the tone could be more friendly and cooperative rather than belittling each other though
