I have been looking for a good propane tank to use for my Skoolie conversion. I have decided on a 100 lb horizontal propane tank (~23.6 gallon). I have found a few options that range from $240 - $750. Can anyone provide insight into good propane tank brands that have this capacity tank? Below are two of the tanks that I am considering. Has anyone ever used the Flame King propane tank for $240 and can provide their opinion on it? I am not opposed to spending more than that on a tank but if it works well I don't see any reason to spend more. The other tank below is slightly smaller but more than twice the cost. This makes me very hesitant to go with the cheaper option. Most other tanks I have found around the $500 range seem to be out of stock everywhere.

Thanks in advance!

Some of the difference is dot vs asme tanks. The asme versions are designed for fixed mounting and don’t need to be recertified after 12 years, are made thicker and heavier and are typically way more expensive. I’m sure they’re somewhat safer but I’m not sure how much or if there’s a way to quantify that. They do have much easier mounting options because of the fixed mounting intent and design, but you have to take your bus to the propane station instead of loading up propane in the car or whatever and coming back to the bus with them, so a lot depends on the usage scenario and the size of the bus. My 35 footer wouldn’t fit at the tractor supply (cheap!) filling station near me so it would be annoying to have an asme tank.

How would you secure that flame king hog? If you’re going to mount Big Boy to your bus get a tank that’s designed to hang. ASME certified.

I was thinking of building a box that would hold the tank in place underneath but I'm thinking the ASME tank is the way to go. I will likely mount the tank directly to the frame and build a box around the tank for protection from any road debris.

Thanks everyone for your insight. The 29.3 gallong Flame King tank looks like a great option. If they get it in stock soon I think I'll be picking one up!

In the end I used 4 20 pound DOT cylinders instead of a ASME tank that I already had because if I am parked I can just remove a bottle and get it refilled with out moving the bus. As for the 12 year cert, I have a blue rhino cyl and 2 others I can't remember which but I can just exchange them. My LPG use is limited to the stove for cooking and Instant water heaters. I heat with diesel and wood.

I bought a Flame King, ASME, ready to hang 12 gallon (50lbs) and it was very easy to find a spot underneath the bus to mount it.

I cut out an access door area for filling it. I sits about 12" in from the bus exterior just in case someone decides to T-bone me.

I used an adapter that allows for connecting a smaller portable tank in case I want to refill without driving the bus, and the same adapter allows for connecting a propane appliance for use outside the bus.

I'm only using a propane cook top and water heater, so the 12 gallons should last a good amount of time.

Hope this helps.

This is what I did after so much looking for the right bolt on tank. Easy to swap at almost any grocery, hardware store, convenience store, gas station, 24 hours a day in some places.
