A member with a 2006 Thomas HDX (Cat C7, Allison 3000 PTS) experienced a limp mode issue after a steep hill and sought advice on reading diagnostic codes without investing in an expensive scanner. Experienced RVers emphasized that a transmission-specific scanner is more useful than an engine scanner for this situation, and highlighted that codes for the Allison 3000 can be retrieved directly through the shifter pushpad, following instructions in the MD3060 operator’s manual. I have a 2006 thomas HDX cat C7 and Allison 3000pts - after going up a steep hill its stuck in a first gear limp. I want to run the codes to see whats up, but didnt feel like spending $400 plus on a scanner. Any thoughts on this?

$400 bucks on a scanner that YOU WILL use again in the future.... Me I have a scanner and when the bus rolls, so does the scanner... I consider this a MUST HAVE if your gonna drive a bus!

What you need today is a tranny scanner and not an engine scanner.
If you have an Allison 3000 you can pull tranny codes thru the pushpad. If you have an Allison 2000 your gonna need Allison doc.

If you have a 2000 tranny you can also do the "Limp home" test to find out if it is electrical or hydraulic, the tranny failure.

pulling trouble codes
download this md3060 operators manual and on page 23 of the PDf you will see the process on how to pull trouble codes thru the pushpad.
have a pen and paper ready because you have to count how many times the light blinks.

Brother, thank you so much for the intention you put into this response. I honor that. What scanner would you buy if you were me? Would you use the same 9 pin port to read those codes? This is an 06 with an Allison 3000 pts - I will check out this link you sent regarding that transmission.

I xan't reccomend a scanner for the cat engine. I never played with a Cat motor. then you will need Cat diag software.
For the allison, a Nexiq clone will do just fine. You will need allison doc for diag software. Older versions (cracked) will do just fine. The Nexiq clones come with all the cables you need.

Again, with an allison 3000, you can pull codes thru the shifter push pad. try that and see what you get.

Ok sweet brother - I bought the Ancel HD601 which will read the J1939 protocol. I found a tech at a shop with the Allison Doc software so I am going to call him and get him the codes that I pull as the vehicle is in the middle of nowhere at the moment.

Do your self a BIG favor...

Look at the Allison manual, how to pull codes. Print it out and when your tech buddy comes by with Allison Doc ask him to show you if your pulling codes correctly on the push pad.

It is real important to know how to do this because one day, you WILL be on the side of the road wishing you had learned!

your not always gonna have help readily available.

Ok brother you got it. I am happy to keep educating myself on this. I haven't found the troubleshooting guide for that trans. Section 6.3 of the manual I found online has a section
"USING SHIFT SELECTOR FOR ACCESSING DIAGNOSTICS INFORMATION"

This is in the operators manual, I am wondering if there is a more in depth troubleshooting manual somewhere -

Good call, no I check the VIN with Thomas and got the serial # on the trans to verify. Its a 5spd Allison 300pts
When you turn the key ON, the shifter will display an "N". Put it in gear and if it is a 5 speed it wiil display "5". 6 speed will display "6". It's that simple.
