Rear engine bench insulation

Can anyone help me with how to insulate over my engine on the rear bench? I’m not sure how hot it gets when driving and what to use to cover it?

The engine compartment should be insulated...I'd use rigid fiberglass...Idk how hot it gets in that area but there were seats there at one time...

So mine is a "step-bench" extending about 4' into the bus. It has two levels and a slope that joins them. The whole lot is covered by an insulating mat.

I plan on building the bed over the lower level. I will add R-Max across the entire surface, held in place by foil tape and sealed at the edges with the same. Then I'll cover it in 1/4" ply, but make it easily removable.

The reason is that the rear engine covering metal has access panels in it to get to the back of the engine. Probably necessary if the head ever has to come off. Mine has two panels. They are both screwed and sealed tight but are eventually removable.

Yep...don't block access panels...and cabinets should be easily movable

Did you remove the "pad" or spray on top of it. If you sprayed on top it will be easy to cut a section out should you ever need access ... if you removed it, access will be a bit more difficult.

Still, it does look very nicely insulated.

I don't doubt you. I have been impressed with your work and enjoyed your thread.

Take a strong flashlight and closely examine that panel from the engine side. They are hard to see because they are so well sealed, but there should be access panels in that panel. We have very similar buses but I guess it's possible they varied a bit.

Still debating whether or not I should remove that pad. It's useful and in good condition in mine.

Very interesting. I will have to check. No sign from top and under my pad was Masonite and had disintegrated and molded so it was an easy choice to remove. If necessary I could cut thru foam...
