Recommendations for shortie in SoCal - what I've learned, please correct me!

Even at 8k that's crazy money for those shorties. That's double Craigslist prices and triple or more auction prices. You can buy good shorties all day long for under 3k.

Double Craigslist prices where though? Anywhere in SoCal?

I've seen smaller shorties with less desirable engines for $5k-$6k around here but that's the closest I've gotten. Granted I'm no expert and haven't been looking long, but I'm trying to get this on the road in 4 months or so.

..and to be clear there are several Chevy 6.5s for much less but I've been advised to stay clear of that engine.

The 6.5 is a great motor but the injection pump is a known weak spot. Given the difference in age (the 6.5 fully replaced the 6.2) I wouldn't reaaaaally expect longer life out of a 6.2's pump, and the replacement cost is about the same. It's about $700 for a rebuilt unit from a reputable shop.
