Hi All

I currently live and work and IL, but am able to work remote a few weeks a month. I just received a few offers on my house, so I’m selling up and buying a skoolie. I’m done with IL and plan to be working 00% remote with 2 years. in the interim, I want as little to do with IL as possible including their ridiculous vehicle licensing, etc. I accept I’ll still have to pay state taxes.

I heard about MyRvMail service and plan to use them as my RV will be my primary residence, so I need a street address and they provide that, as well as scanning my mail.

From what I’ve read, I can register for domicile in FL.

I’m a bit puzzled about then titling/registering my skoolie. can I get the title, plates and registration without actually going to Florida. Should I also transfer my 4x4 and Travel trailer to FL? Would I have to pay any tax when I transfer these if I’m domiciled in Florida

Also, what about Fl drivers license? I assume I have to go there to get that?

Thanks
Mark

For every vehicle you own in Florida, you have to pay an additional $250 plate fee (in addition to the registration). It's a one time fee and can transfer. I forgot about this when I registered my bus. I could've transfered the tag from my truck, but I drive both. Just something to consider. If your not actually going to avoid state taxes yet and you just want to license your vehicles, then I would look at South Dakota or Vermont..

Im not sure if you could register the vehicle without you being here. For my vin verification on the title change, I had to have the vehicle here, but if there's no title change, you may not need it..

Thanks a lot

Did you have to pay any tax when you registered?

I did have to pay sales tax as I just bought it. When I moved here years ago, I did not pay it for vehicles I brought from out of state, since they were already paid in another state the first time I registered them.

A notary can do the vin verification but I am not sure if it has to be a Florida notary.

I did mine that way since the bus would not fit in the tag agency parking lot.

Set up legal domicile, including voting, DL and registration, after it is "livable" I assume means converted.

They are all above board, lawyers vetted, ties to the county offices, courts, DMV

Not just RVers but yotties roaming the world as permanent nomads.

We chose South Dakota for our domicile when we left Illinois and went full time. The outfit we used was Your Best Address, though there are others in SD. To get domicile in South Dakota you only need to spend a night in a hotel, and bring the receipt as proof of residency. Some campgrounds work too, IIRC. There are no state income taxes or vehicle safety inspections in SD, and you only have to come back every 5 years to get your Drivers License renewed. It was super easy. There is a vehicle wheel tax but its better than paying IL property taxes! We did have trouble finding insurance for the bus, being full-time. I think being full-timers and it being a bus conversion was just too unusual. We ended up getting Progressive Commercial liability only, though we've seen that State Farm has insured other full-time skoolies.
