For some reason my phone won't open your PDF.

Edit. I was able to open from a computer.
Are the prices quoted for the seals and gaskets including labor?
If they're not including labor they are overcharging you by several hundred dollars for the actual gaskets. They have to remove the compressor to do the tappet cover gasket anyway. And they have to remove the front cover to get to the pump Gear 2 remove the gear. It looks like they're charging you double for some of the labor.

No , i was skeptical of that as well, he said it would be about 200 in "shop parts" on top of gasket. They said they could not run diagnostics because there was no power to the port ?

I don't know what shop Parts he is including but to replace the front seal all it takes is a ratchet and a seal driver. To replace the tappet cover gasket all it takes is a pump removal tool for about $29 and a $15 gasket and your basic hand tools. And in about $10 worth of cleaning supplies and rags and you pretty much have what you need. The front seal cost under $30 from Cummins. The Tropic cover gasket and the 6 gaskets that go with the bolts cost under $30 as well. Have him itemized the shop cost so you can see what he's charging you for.

And the wear sleeve he is talking about is usually only used if the front seal has been replaced one time before and there is a Groove in the crankshaft. When the engine is new from the factory they install the seal outboard. When you replace the seal they give you a driver to set it in about a quarter of an inch so then it's riding on a different part of the crank. It's only after you have replaced the seal several times that you would need a wear sleeve.

He's also charging you over $370 to hook the computer up and read codes ... you could buy a knockoff nexiq usb link 2 for that price and check yourself.

pretty steep!! imo

what does he charge for an hourly rate? the $3800? is that a week? say 8 hours to open it up and close it (the grill, radiator, fan) then ???? for replacing gaskets?

big boy trucks = big boy wallet

what all is wrong with it. i see all kinds of wild goose chases.
air, oil leaks?

i had a mechanic replace my air compressor. i hope i got a new gasket, it was only $1500, $300 was parts.

ditto on the computer stuff!
he even says he's not sure if he's going to have to replace the injection pump!

You guys see R & R Bosch Injection pump???

Make sure you upgrade your fuel lift pump from stock engine mounted Carter to closer to tank mount FASS or Raptor or whatever. Look-up 5.9 Bosch VP44 Inj Pump, it has to have 15-18 PSI WOT to stay alive.

My build has some of my notes.

Get other estimates, as well. good practice. :wink1:

Oil leak...moderate. abs light is on. Runs rough on idle when you first turn it on then run s fine. Brake sensor doesent detect parking break is on. Slight wobble when driving above 70mph

Not to be rude, but are you accustomed to diesel engines? They all sputter a bit until warm. Do you have fresh fuel /good filters in her?

Brake thing could be as simple as adjusting plunger switch.

Tell us more details and the armchair mechanics will chime-in. Hate to see you spend unnecessarily, you will bleed cash soon enough !

when my compressor went out on the side of the road it was $250 for parts and $350 labor.. not $1500 total!. wow

We have diesels at work but there the f450s not anything like the bus really . I should clarify , i let it warm up and when i put it in gear it sputters and dies unless i hit the gas. The school district recently replaced the fuel pump but not the filters. I suspect it has to do with a dirty fuel filter. I asked the mechanic to take a look at it and give me a list of everything that needed to be fixed, but somehow im 500 in the hole for the assessment and nothing has been fixed. They said 7k and thats just the beginning. I feel like they are trying to pull the wool over our eyes but i wanted some other peoples take on it.

i'm pretty sure you can by a rebuilt cummins 5.9 for about $7500, add another $3k for labor to install.

Its more of a sound than a feeling. Hard to describe.

Looks like that shop seen you coming!
Go somewhere else, this place is intent on ripping you off.
When you go in, dress like you're poor and from a rural area. At least in my experience, what you look like has a lot to do with how they treat you.
