Hello! Can anyone chime in about how difficult it is to change out a rear axle seal on a bus? Our 1992 Bluebird TC2000 is leaking from the left rear wheel. The shop quoted us $400 including an inner and outer bearing. I am wondering if it is a job I can do myself. I am fairly good mechanically... but don't know if it's something that requires special tools, etc. I have never worked on anything as big as the bus

I'd pay the $400, unless you have a way to pull the wheels off and the hub, etc. I can do it and I'd probably still pay the $400.

I doubt you'll want to do it yourself. Replacing a wheel seal is a fairly straightforward, uncomplicated job but you'll need to have a socket that is big enough(like 4-5 inches big) to remove the axle nut that holds the bearings on. You'll also need a dial indicator and a torque wrench to set bearing preload and I would highly recommend using the proper seal installer unless you want to do it multiple times. All of those things are stuff the average joe won't have. You'll also have to remove the brake shoes which isn't something most people could do. If it's someone you trust just pay the guy the money that way you know it's all done right, it's not something you want to take a chance on.

We are having the shop do it while they do our injection pump. Thanks for the tips!

It's big, but very simple. The truck repair guys have to make a living too, so I don't find fault in taking something like that to them.
