Roof top deck

I really like the idea of a deck on the roof of my 24foot e350 city transporter. Not sure on the materials I should use and i couldn't find any forums on this topic... I want to keep it light weight.

Ours is more of a luggage rack, but maybe will give you some ideas. We kept it really low to the bus roof, because we were shipping it overseas at one point and every inch matters when you RoRo! It is very very sturdy. The front has the spare tires mounted on it and the back has been used for extra storage, but also makes a great vantage point. We used bed rails and perforated sheet steel for the racks, and rebar and rails for the ladder. The rebar is a little hard on bare feet, we added some foam pipe insulation to make it softer.

The frame for the two pieces was welded by a buddy, and he set up the bolts so they would match up to the structural ribs on top. They are thru bolted and the ends are covered inside by those nifty little plastic bolt covers you use on toilet tanks. No one has hit their head on them yet!

We've had 9 people up there for a photo op, and memorably, a friend rode up there with a GoPro all the way down the Transfaragasan in Romania. Probably not legal, but no harm, no foul.

The tire rack has lower sides, but have big bolts and bars that strap across the tires. These didn't budge, even in the crater-sized potholes we've encountered in our bus.
