I plan on having access to the roof via a ladder. Due to double rear doors it won't be effective mounted on the back, so I will mount it on a side. Question is, What side and how for up? It'll add close to 6" width. I can make it removable.

On the side would be asking for problems. Catching on all kind of things. Why not attach it to the door and let it swing with the door?

I climb on the roof via the emergency hatch. ... Don't like to give others an easy opportunity to climb on the roof.

What problems will I run into when parked? I'm getting old and don't like the unsteady transition to the roof from a ladder below roof line. If I had a permanent ladder , it would have a lockable to cover to prevent unwanted use.:thumb:

compensation board says 'ladders must extend 2 feet above the roof' - that's for house and building construction and repair - 2' above a roof line on a bus wouldn't be practical - the idea of the ladder extending past the roof is for ease off getting off or getting on the ladder - it does make quite a difference, much safer when it goes above the roof line
