Hey folks,

We're a late twenties couple on our way to building our new home. We're becoming increasingly antsy in our current situation and want to get started with whatever we can as soon as possible.

We've already seen some great tips here, especially about living in while converting.

I'm curious what everyone does for work here since we're also working toward making that switch as well.

Hope to see ya around!

Hi and welcome
I've heard of all manner of ways to live aboard and convert. Kinda depends on which "creature comforts" you're willing to give up and just get it down to the bare necessities. Camp stove,, mattress, ice chest, water jugs, p==p bucket. As you progress you can improve each of those areas. As an added bonus you'll also test the strength of your relationship. ;-)

No Bus Required, to Start Building

Before you buy, you can set up your build/campsite.

Many of us have to trim branches and make space. A clean, dry area of flat ground. A concrete pad or limerock is good, a canopy or roof is even better.

Build a picnic table to use as a workbench and eating. Add chairs or a swing. Install running water w/ a sink &/or outdoor shower, 120v/20A receptical, secure storage, drink cooler and most importantly, sanitation facilities.

You don't need a bus to build these items and you'll know if your plan works for your lifestyle. Introducing our butts to our DIY commode was easier in our house restroom. Basic human necessities will be needed on the first day of the build or even a 6 hour ride home.

I always liked to tell folks before spending the money on a "tiny house" to go live in their garage or shed for a whole month and see how it feels.
Or if wanting to be mobile buy a used travel trailer or rent an rv and see how that goes.

As DeMac illustrated- the best way to do the skoolie thing (for a lot of us) is to own property so there's always somewhere to park the bus.

For work you're going to want to do something like start a company that you can manage remotely, inherit some money, or just be independently wealthy to begin with. Otherwise- its more or less probably gona be "nomadic" life but one with spotty income as you'll need to find odd jobs as you travel. Deadheads did this in buses for decades but to make it they all had some sort of a hussle or side gig- or were wealthy.

Just my 2 cents. But - it should be noted I live in a house in town and just own a bus for fun. Maybe this is the year I put the AC, dinette, and bunk bed in it?? lol
