Skoolie Wrecker

I was headed down the interstate earlier this afternoon when I saw a convoy of skoolies up ahead on the shoulder. One had the front end up in the air like it was being towed. I was confused though, because I didn't see anything that appeared to be a tow truck. Just skoolies.

As I got closer, I realized that one of them was an old activity bus (the only one of the group that was white), and had been cut up and a wrecker boom had been added to the back.

Looked very much like this one, except it was a full-size conventional bus...

By the time I'd dropped off the logs I was hauling and got headed back the other way, they were gone. I'm still mad I didn't get a chance to pull over and get a picture of it.

Interesting use for a skoolie... I can't help but think: BUT WHY!??

A lot of the low end tow truck companies use bus drivetrains. Why not directly use a bus?

I'm kind of doubtful about the lift capacity of that cutaway.

There're a couple things I can think of that might've led them to turn the one into a wrecker that I saw...

If they have a whole fleet of buses for whatever they're using them for, it would probably only take having to pay a tow bill a couple times before they realized the savings that could be seen by being able to bring one in on the hook themselves.

Or, if they're an outfit out of Florida that buys buses by the handful for export, they might've decided the most cost effective way of picking them up was to send a bus full of drivers north, and then have their driver transport bus equipped to drag a bus back south with it.

Whatever their reasoning for building it was, it looked like they did a really good job with it. I only got a quick look at it as I was flying past, but it looked like they bobbed the frame right behind the rear springs. Minimal overhang in the back kept there from being any noticeable suspension compression while it had another bus on the hook.

Yeah, that cutaway... I can't see that thing being very useful. It was just the only picture I could find anywhere of a bus with the back wall moved forward and a wrecker boom grafted on.

Still a cool idea. And who knows about the cutaway. They could have easily changed its load capacity.

Your theory about the load of bus drivers makes sense. That might account for why a certain auction is bid us so high once in a while. Proxy bidding my butt.
