I suspect that most states have something similar to what we have here in WA. You can buy and sell a certain number of vehicles in one year without a dealers license. Memory is failing me but I think that it's five a year here.

That would make the low volume high margin plan appealing here.

The guy I know that got caught doing it is. I think he's in the big house because a little more snooping by the feds and they found way more amiss then just tax evasion.

however flipping busses is at some point going to catch someone's eye.. esp if it ends up being more than just a few a year.. if nothing else than for lack of paying income taxes on the money made...

In Ohio it's five per year as well. Still have to have the titles in your name and pay any taxes and fees.

And that could all be a good deal if you buy a top notch bus, market it right and make enough on the other end. Dealers mark up your standard run of the mill buses several thousand, why couldn't an individual do that to a top of the line model.

I think its more to do with the gov't missing out on the taxes from the lack of legal transfer to the seller. The gov't doesn't like missing out on tax money.

That is THE reason why...

Dealers can do it because they pay taxes through other means...

I'm quite sure part of the reason why dealers markup is so much IS because they have to cover their business licence fees and taxes...

There's a reason the US treasury no longer makes $500 & $1000 dollar bills...

There's a reason "government" is unhappy about 'bit-coin' and other mediums...

Not all government is bad -- BLESS the state gov. of Vt for making it possible to title/register my bus... :whistling:

ayway the issue is that there is a paper trail...



school sells bus to Joe.. joe hasngds onto bus and then sells to Mike.. mike has either a Bill of salewthat says School->joe (with a different amount) or a faked Bill of sale from joe that says school-> mike ..


I only bring up the BOS because every vehicle in ohio I have bought from out of state, they want to see the title and a bill of sale..



the BOS thing started when it was evident that almost everyone in ohio wrote the sale price as $100 or "GIFT" for individual - individual car sales.. or maybe there was out of state fraud of some sort.. not sure.. but they only ask for sales tax and not a valuation tax like some states do..



I have no ideas how it works in states that dont issue titles on older vehicles..







interesting thing is they never ask for one for an in state transfer...

Its all a scam to make money. It's not wrong, its law, we voted for it, with our representatives, etc.

In WI it used to be 3 a year, not sure now. My uncle got warned once, doing it legally and exceeded the limit.

I personally think that tax should only be collected once on any vehicle. I know pickup trucks that have be sold 5-6 times during it's life.

What kills me is another scam, insurance. I own 7 vehicles and pay the same insurance as 7 people with 7 vehicles, with a slight multiple vehicle discount. I can't possible drive all 7 at the same time. The driver should be insured, not the vehicle, but that's another discussion for a different time.

To the original OP, sorry I tripped the switch on this discussion, should have probably kept it to ourselves. I had it figured out and really didn't need to ask.

GA will ask to see a bill of sale but if you only have a title, no big deal if you don't. It's partly as "proof of purchase price paid", which becomes a factor if you disagree with the state's valuation of your vehicle (they typically use the Blue Book value), or in some rare cases, an obscure vehicle isn't listed. For our purposes, because the used school bus market doesn't really have a Blue Book valuation (not enough market segment to justify it, and besides, most buses are well over 10 years old by the time they are sold), as such, they will generally accept any reasonable declared value you give them. "I Paid $1 for this bus", well, that may be technically and legally true, but what is the bus *WORTH*? Even for scrap it would bring a few hundred. Or "I paid $1500 at auction"? That's a fair market value, since the auction was presumably open for anyone to bid, and that's the market it sold in, and the value that particular group of bidders felt it was worth.


As an aside, GA requires titles for any vehicle 1986 and newer, it used to be that a bill of sale was allowed for any vehicle so many years or older. That law was changed quite some time ago to require titles from that point forward. If an older vehicle is sold with a title, they will issue a new one but they will not honor requests for a title to be issued when only a bill of sale is used. GA also does not require titles for certain vehicles (farm and small trailers) but again, they will issue a new title if one is presented.

I'd rather go get 2 or 3 buses and triple my money on each one than constantly be getting buses for a percentage profit.

I know the thread started out as Spring vs. Air ride but it kind of drifted into a Shadiness vs. Integrity issue.

It's not fair to the dealers that have to pay a lease, commercial liability insurance, bond money and deal with state/federal motor vehicle dealer regulations and all the other financial stuff that comes with being a business.

I have no problem with people that legally register the vehicle in their name before selling. Title jumpers cheat the system, usually to avoid liability and paying taxes.

I got my 2007 international HC 37' bus in Florida for $2,500.00 has re sleeved dt466 and 2500 MH allison transmission. Does 75 mph at 2200 rpm. They let me use their plate to bring it home to Massachusetts. That was a long test drive this is a 12 window bus
