Step the frame down in a Gillig?

Another Gillig pusher brainstorm:

I was amazed to find the big luggage compartment under the floor, and then see the frame rails "hanging" in there, along the top of the compartment.

How about stepping the frame rails down to the bottom of the luggage compartment? Then the floor could be lowered in that part of the bus, rather than raising the roof. The new sections could be all bolted in before the old is cut away. (I have seen some old 18-wheeler tractors that had been lengthened by bolting.)

Ever heard of this? Thoughts?
