Strength of ledge and handle at corner of windshield?

How strong is this ledge here:



and the handle just above it to the left? I've been standing on this with my full weight from time to time and also supporting myself (not at the same time) with the handle.

They both seem very secure and solid, but I'm considering building a temporary scaffolding to allow me to work on the top front of my bus without standing on the hood and I'm considering having it rest (in part) on these ledges while being lashed to the handles (to keep it from pulling away from the bus).

So I'm wondering what kind of weights they can bear.

Unless you're Gordo, the morbidly obese bus boy, you should ought be fine.
Once lashed off snugly, there won't be much strain on the handles, and that shelf is solidly constructed steel.
The protuding edge from the windscreen to the hood, while narrow, could support some reasonable weight.
From a safety perspective, you'd be better served by a platform you needn't mince about on, and can exert force from a more advantageous angle.

I don't have that ledge, but did build a scaffold of sorts....a couple of 2x4s stretching from the cowl to the top of the radiator, with planks across that. Blocks on the underside at the radiator end to level the platform and clear everything on top of the engine block.

I've used it a lot and it's worked well.

My plan is a short 2x8 running from that ledge to a vertical 4x4 that rests on the ground just in front of the bumper, with a bolt going through the bumper (not to support any weight but to keep bottom of the 4x4 from sliding out). One of these on each side and then two wide, thick planks to hold the two together and support me. Hopefully the whole thing will assemble and disassemble easily.
