Subscribing to threads

I keep "unsubscribing" to threads that I did not "subscribe" to that I know of. This is tiresome. I don't want all those notices in my email account. I have enough junk sent to me as it it. Is there a way to default the check box to NOT send me junk rather than chase it down to the bottom of the page every freakin' time?
