temp gauge issues

Hey there, not much for posting, or asking. A real big thanks for everyone here, we have been reading and reading, searching and searching for the past 2 years, you all have helped more than you know!!

1997 BB TC2000 5.9 cummins, AT545 trans

My issue is gauges, engine temp and trans temp. Seems both are not working, also, my tach doesn't work right after starting, but will engage after a few rpms and then be fine.

Gonna dive into this next day or so, what to look for? Bad ground? Ground for all 3? or something else.

Thinking about upgrading gauges, where are the sending units, engine? trans? On the trans, looks like theres a sensor coming out of the drivers side of the pan, that the temp sensor?

check to see what type of temp gauges you have.

some run off of electric, some are thermocouple.

just my opinion, but if the gauge lights are working and its not reading, its probably a broken thermocouple.

Hmmmm, come to think of it, some of the lights are not working.... will look into that

normally if more than one guage has a problem at the same time it is coz of something like a bad ground at the panel ...

There is a fuse listed on my bluebird "tach zero" or something like that. When I pulled it the tach was jumping all over the place.
Start simple, check your fuses first and then work your way along, checking for power at the gauge, then for ground.
When you are checking for power and ground, the bus should be running (ask how I know lol)
If there isn't power, figure out where the power is coming from.. check the temp probes for voltage (a Google search may help you determine what the correct voltage is) with a multimeter.

my last water temp gauge was a thermocouple type. $10 at the parts store got me a new gauge and thermocouple.

Poked around the gauge cluster, yeah i remember doing dash things, all the ribbon cables and trying to follow things, not fun in the high school days, and not fun now lol

The engine temp in within the cluster on the 97 tc2000, the trans temp gauge is off to the side, separate from the cluster.

Im thinking just upgrading the gauges, aftermarket....any suggestions?

Engine temp should be fairly easy to do.

Trans temp, looks like i have a sending unit on the AT545, its on the drivers side mounted mid level on the pan. Any suggestions on what would fit there?

Oh the 545 is a remanu...guess thats good bad or ugly lol

btw, i got alot of pics and such, will update profile and such, i suck at keeping things updated

I've replaced three of my original Teleflex quarter-sweep gauges with new Speedhut full-sweep gauges, for coolant and transmission temperatures and for oil pressure. If you have standard 2-1/16" holes, these will work. I like them because they are accurate, have good resolution, and use stepper motors for consistent readings. Speedhut custom-makes them to order, so you can probably match your other existing gauges pretty well.

I really don't like quarter-sweep gauges, and I'm now down to just two of them left - all the eighteen others now are full-sweep. I hate having to guess what the temperature or pressure is because the numbered graduations are not close enough to be useful.

Just an update, didnt mess with tracing down the malfunction, just installed 2 new temp gauges, Bosh, there ok, do the job, may or may not keep them. Maiden voyage this past weekend, 600 miles....easy peasy

Glad your gages work good now. Next time will be the other end so at least you have time to trace them out back to the sensors.

Easy peasy is what we all strive and prey for with our beasts I think.
