Toyhauler Ramp Build

I am building a ramp on the back of my bus. The back wall will be cut off and a fold down ramp attached to load ATVs, snowmobiles, etc. Currently building it as a one piece ramp. If the angle turns out to be too steep, I may make a second section so that it can unfold.

Here are some measurements:

• 38"- floor to ground height
• 66"- top of wall to floor (will result in a 66" long ramp
• 23 deg.- approx angle of ramp to ground if I keep it 1 piece
• 12'- length of rear 'garage' (to front of wheelwells)
• 7'6"- inside width of bus

What is your plan to open and close door with the bumper being 3 feet off the ground?


The Millicent ....Elliot, has a tailgate on his done with pulleys and cables, assuming some kind of counter weights as well.


We decided on doors to keep the insects and weather out.

The ramp is going to be covered in plywood and have foam weatherstripping around the edges to seal it up. It will be raised/lowered with a 12v winch. It will give me the ability to open the ramp halfway to make a deck/porch. I have some pictures but photobucket is not behaving at the moment

Ramp is working!

Got a lot of work done over the weekend. Have the 2 part ramp mounted and the winch cables run. Winch is able to open and close the ramp with ease. Need another half sheet of plywood and some paint and she will be all set!

The bottom of the ramp mocked up for hinge placement. The hinges are welded to a 2x2 crossmember that is bolted to one of the floor 'joists'. The ramp then bolts to the hinge. This makes it 100% removable if I decide to get a new bus

Winch mounted to one of the roof cross braces. It seems very solid. The winch raises and lowers the ramp. It is only hooked onto that cable. Once the ramp is open, it can be unhooked to then pull in a non-running snowmobile, etc

The ramp partially finished. We had to take it down to Home Depot for some plywood.

Here is the finished ramp. It still needs come paint and another 2 hinges on the second section for added strength

Ramp held partially open. The beauty of the winch is that the ramp can be held in any position if needed.
