Transmission filter leak? Intl 3000

I purchased a semi-converted 1999 International 3000 bus back in the fall which has, overall, been running great. However, it looks like the winter hasn't been super kind and so it appears to be leaking transmission fluid (as far as I can tell). I'm hoping someone might be able to confirm that the circled rusted part shown in the picture is indeed the transmission fluid filter. There is certainly red fluid dripping from it and I'm hoping that it should be as easy as replacing the part to get the leak sorted out. Any other thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Looks like it. Where do the lines that are connected to the filter head go? That will determine what fluid it's filtering.

Haha, that's a great question. You would think I would have checked that. I couldn't quite tell as first glance, but it's definitely mounted on the side of the transmission (which I believe is an Allison AT545). I'll try to get a couple more pictures and reply again.

Looks like the tranny spin-on filter to me. I have an AT545.


The filter number on mine is NAPA Gold 7268, since it looks like yours may be unreadable.

Amazing! Thanks, Johnny. Two quick questions, if you have time:

(1) Is it necessary to drain the entire transmission before replacing the filter?
(2) Do you have a recommendation for a replacement filter part?

You do not have to drain the trans to change the filter. The filter is high enough that you won't lose much fluid. I use Baldwin filters and the number for yours should be the same as mine. Baldwin BT839-10
