I registered my skoolie right before the Vermont loophole was closed in 2023, but the registration will expire on May 2025. I try to renew my registration online but it keep popping an error at the last step before payment: "
There was an issue processing your request. Please try again later."

I'm not sure if this is a technical issue or they don't even allow out-of-state vehicle to renew their existing vermont registration anymore? Has anyone successfully renewed their registration after the loophole has been close?

If I can't renew in the vermont, what are the alternative method to register my skoolie before I finish converting it to something can be registered as a motorhome.

Speaking as someone who works in info tech, it's probably just a technical glitch unless it persists more than a few days in which case I'd call and ask.

We got renewal paperwork in the mail, filled it out and sent it back.

No problems.

You might call them, the folks at the desk were friendly and helpful when our registration got stolen. Seems they aren't permanently swamped like most dmv's

Answer my own thread:

Just called VT DMV this morning. NO, they do not allow register new out-of-state vehicle or renew existing out-of-state vehicle. But they can now provide a VT title to (used to be a certificate) with $42. You will bring this title to your home state and register there.

Hello,
When did you mail in the renewal? I called this morning, the lady seems suggest renewal is not allowed for out-of-state vehicle. I'm not 100% sure because she first look confused until I told her my vehicle is out-of-state and then she seems convinced that's the issue.

Ahhh... last august? Perhaps the one before. It was after the loophole closed. We were worried about it, but it just worked out, thankfully. At least for a while longer. if y'all are having issues, we'll probably be getting ****ed soon enough

Bastards

UPDATE:

I mailed in the registration renew form, Vermont DMV has mailed back the new registration certificate to me in two weeks. The sticker is no longer provided tho. So to answer my own question. YES, if you have registered your vehicle before the loophole closed, you have no problem renewing the existing registration.

where to register now (6/2025) for out of state without a full conversion? i bought a truck, and want to convert it motor home/rv where can i get this done?

Your options are:
1. Register in your home state
2. Move to (or at minimum establish residency) in another state.
3. Register in Vermont with your home state's written permission (your odds of winning the lotto and getting struck by lightning at the same time are probably greater)
4. Register in a different state under an LLC. Note this may cause issues with insurance later, they see "bus" and "LLC" together and immediately think "party bus business" which is high risk - I should know, I ran one for almost a decade.

If you have not received your renewal card in the mail, give them a call. They are still renewing plates issued before the loophole closed.

cant register in home state, they require a full conversion, doing llc will not convert truck to rv on paper, i spoke to them this morning, it must be a full conversion done by a licensed contractor to qualify as converted, party bus biz is not in the books :p Vermont is one of the states that allows conversion of title without physical conversion, and no out of state registration is allowed anymore
