Wheel/tire question

Pardon my dumba**ery, but......what is the difference between an 8-lug and a 10-lug wheel? Is the 8-lug a smaller diameter? In my search for a conventional long-nose shorty I see both.

I guess my real question is can you put as tall a tire on an 8-lug as you can a 10-lug?

The 10-lug wheels are far more common and generally come in 22.5" and 24.5" sizes. They typically come in two widths for smaller and larger tires, respectively. (I am not including those really wide wheels for heavy-duty steering axles, or the so-called "super Singles"). Someone had a thread on the forum about them and the sizes of tires that could be safely mounted on each.

8 Lug and 10 Lug describes the # of lug bolts/nuts used to secure the wheel to the hub assembly. Notice the # of holes outside the center large hole.

Rim/tire sizing depends on more then just the lug count. The diameter is also specified with most rims being either 22.5 or 24.5 with some shorties having the smaller 19.5. Rims will also have a different width to them as well which will be matched to the tire width. There's also other specifications involved in determining rims.

You can have both 8 and 10 lug rims in the 22.5 and 24.5 diameter. Most of the time the 8 lug variants are on lighter duty axles, however, that's not always the case.

Also...you need to know if the rim is "hub centric" or centered by the lugs. If there are dimples into which tapered lugs fit...it is not hub centric. Those are held in position by the fit between the center hole and the actual hub.

That can also limit choices as far as rims/tires.

And there are also "accuride" wheels that are sorta like hub centered but have ball seat lugs instead of the washer/lug setup.

If you are equipped with hub-centric wheels, is it OK to substitute a "lug-centric" wheel with a larger center hole and tapered lug holes? (assuming you use appropriate tapered lugnuts)

And while I'm pondering imponderables here, is there more than one spec in the world for lugnut taper? For the same size wheels; I'm not very interested to find out that the taper is different on a Plymouth and a Peterbilt.

As long as the overall fit is correct, you should be able to mount lug centered onto any hub centric wheel as far as I know.
