I'm hoping to find a skoolie to do some traveling in.

The thoughts I have in mind:
I'd prefer at least medium duty based (not E350/E450)
30' max - I want to be able to go interesting places
high enough inside that I can stand in (I'm 6'1") - this shouldn't be a problem in a short but "full size" rig
1997 or earlier, diesel - this is related to CA registration
AC at least when driving
26k GVWR max, already registered as RV/motorhome/whatever (not truck)

Something box truck based would also be an option as well. I can deal with adding a bunch of solar and so on myself, I have a Sprinter and I can camp for a week with no power worries due to solar.

Any suggestions on where to look? I understand that this is significant list.

Lot's of busses on Market place.
The big problem your gonna have is traveling to inspect, and you need to thoroughly inspect!
Their are some good builds out there and alot of questionable ones too.
Be real cautious with a roof raised bus as getting insurance can be a real nightmare to get!

also, stay away with anything that has an Allison at545 tranny. They are not built for long term highway speeds, no locking torque convertor.

Skoolielivin.com has a lot of listings. You will likely need a roof raised bus if you're looking for that kind of height. Keep in mind if you want to stay inside the national parks, they limit rigs to 26 or 28 feet. Just double check that before you buy a bus two feet longer than allowed. Of course, there are usually good spots to boondock around the national parks too....

They typically will allow up to 30 footers on the ones that limit them. Mine is 30 and not been rejected. I'm probably at the limit they allow though.

Here is a list of vehicle lengths permitted at national parks. It may be out of date but it gives you an idea.
