Winterizing

Getting ready to move the bus to a storage spot for the winter. Any special considerations or procedures to follow to winterize a school bus with a 5.9L diesel engine?

Do we need to put a fuel stabilizer in the diesel? If so, can we use the same Sta-Bil that I use to winterize the lawn mower, etc?

Any help & advice is appreciated!!

Put pink RV antifreeze in all the water lines.

Think rat poison.

Stuff steel wool in the tailpipe.

Drive it occasionally if at all possible...sitting without running will kill a diesel.

I wouldn't use poison, you don't want the mice going back to where they sleep (like your air ducts, in the walls, any hidden place) and dying. Set lots of traps with peanut butter and put LOTS of dryer sheets around the bus.

I am fighting some rodents right now, they are chewing up all the fabrics. I finally declaired ware on them a couple days ago and I hope to rid the bus completely of them. :twisted:

I once had a mouse problem and someone told me to put little cloth bags of mint in all the places the mice liked. It seemed to work, but it was so long ago I can't remember if it was mint or peppermint. The mice do not like the smell of one of them.

You need to describe what happens when you try to start it


Check the batteries. If you don’t have somewhere around 13 volts you should charge them.

Antifreeze in your p-traps is a no brainer. Putting it in your water supply is a last resort in my opinion. I think I’d try to drain the system. Maybe some others will chime in.

As far as the no start condition, you might consider starting a new thread there’s a lot of knowledge here, but you want a new link to get eyes on it

My Cummins 5.9 has no grid heater installed from the factory (BB TC2000). If the temperature gets down to 20F I have to plug int the block heater to get it to start.
