Anybody familiar with a cable TV show called Magnificent Obsessions? Looks like some of us Kinetic Sculpture Racers are going to be on it -- filming next weekend.

And somebody suggested that Millicent might also belong on that show. Well, I said, maybe with some of the others.

So... is there any interest? This TV crew is traveling all over the country. Is your Skoolie worthy of a few minutes as a "Magnificent Obsession". Speak up now!
:D

Naturally!

If I'm going to pitch this to the lady from New York, I would need to have a handfull of really interesting buses lined up. I can always get hold of her later, but there is nothing like "striking while the iron is hot".

Skoolie Gathering 2008 thread+Your Skoolie on TV thread=

I like the idea but if it does happen it really needs to be near the center of the states like what was said before. Even if we have to do it at a campground that will have a bunch of us in one shot. And we do need advanced warning as to the dates it would be. I often need up to 6 months, and most holidays don't work for me cause other people always get them days before me which doesn't bother me cause I'd rather visit a area when no one else is there.

As to Magnificent Obsessions, I don't think I've heard of it. What channel is it on and what time? Or is it like that other program that comes on travel channel every so often where they show those homemade RV's out of a fire truck, water truck or what ever else they had?

I wouldn't mind seeing my little bus on the TV, but the only thing unique I have to offer is the wheelchair lift.

this jacuzzi bus is gonna be for sale, but jacuzzi bus IV should be completed before Christmas and i would be more than happy to show her off.

or

the crew can come live with me for the next 2 months and watch us build the new bus lol i'm sure that would be exciting.

:D
Ah yes... looks like KC10chief will be hosting us in OKC! http://www.skoolie.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=2565

Sure, if we are gathered, it would be easier for the TV crew. I occationally visit a forum about BMW motorcycles, and that bunch gets together twice a year at a member's place in Tennessee. But fitting it into our schedules would be tough. Easier to let the big shot TV people come to us.

I don't know anything about this TV show. Except that it is a High Definition channel on cable. I don't even have regular TV, so....

:D
Ah! Here we are!

"Magnificent Obsessions" is a half hour high definition program that
airs nationally on Treasure HD, one of the Dish Network's high
definition channels. In the past we've featured such varied topics as a
female skydiving team, roller coaster enthusiasts, and civil war
re-enactors.

I knew I had this info somewhere. Treasure HD, on Dish Network. That ought to have, what... six or seven viewers?

Maybe TLC or The Travel Channel would enjoy doing a special on skoolies. They could use stock footage from other specials to follow the evolution of the bus conversion crowd and then top it off with a modern day skoolie nut convention.

Or how about Stacy David with his new show Gears? He doesn't seem to stick to any specific genre of motorsports.

I think the idea is cool and it would be enjoyable if for no other reason than to push the limits of how people stereotype skoolie owners. There are big family conversions, pet friendly conversions, basic conversions such as my own, handicap accessible conversions, party conversions (ahem...Jason), toy hauler conversions, ritzy high end stuff like Steve, Les, and Jake VonSlatt to name a few. The only common theme would be build it how you want it.

:D
In my limited experience, show business is very much a hierarchy -- you start out small and work your way up. This Treasue HD is probably a realistic "first step". I'll bring it up with them next week.
:D

I do alot of Video work around Atlanta with many local bands. I also do photography. If we dont have a tv show who would like to cover us I can do a professional video show and post it on all the different video hosting sites. I have the equipment needed to do this. We would have millions of potential viewers. Many of the music videos I shoot get a few 100K views. So I think we could do our own show. I also have interviewed many rock stars and worked for the Classic Rock station for 6 years before they had a format change. I can do a great fun show.

I will also plan on the "Gathering of the Skoolies of 2008"

:D
We'll keep that in mind.

Say, Dizzy, I need to show films with a projector next weekend, and I want to have the projector behind the screen. I've seen people use a spandex type of material for the screen. I also see that I can buy such spandex screen on eBay. But I need it right away, and cheap. What do I look for in the local fabric stores, do you know?
:D

What if the show becomes a hit or a cult classic, then everyone will want a school bus. Supply and demand will come into play and we will no longer be able to buy a bus for cheap. :( :(

Man I haven't dealt with real film in years I do digital so that question not one I can give an accurate answer too. I am more less the camera/production type. I wouldn't want to lead you wrong!

:D
Dizzy: This is digital also -- films on DVD and a digital projector. But light is light. Don't worry, I'll find something to use for a screen. One guy uses white sheer window curtain material.

i bought some spandex material from jo-ann fabric's for pretty cheap recently. They don't call it spandex, but "swimwear material" or something like that. I had to ask the sewing lady to help because i couldn't find it.

if you go that route i'll post a really cool method to attach it to a frame...requires only zip ties and marbles.
